Fish Oil And Heart Health

There is a well-established connection between fish oil and heart health.

Studies have shown that fish oil, containing Omega 3 fatty acids, provides these heart health benefits:

  • Reduces incidence of cardiovascular disease
  • Improves cardiac mortality
  • Improves abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias
  • Improves lipids (blood fats)
    • Increases HDL (good) cholesterol
    • Reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol
    • Reduces Triglycerides
  • Decreases blood pressure somewhat
  • Prevents and treats atherosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries

The end result is that fish oil with Omega 3s reduces many of the risk factors for heart disease and improves the symptoms of those who suffer from cardiac disease. That’s one of the reasons why so many people — including me! — are taking fish oil.

The Unlikely Fact That Lead To The Discovery Of A Connection Between Fish Oil And Heart Health

Fish Oil And Heart HealthYou may be wondering how the connection between fish oil and heart health was discovered since it doesn’t seem like there would be a relationship between the oil in fatty fish and human heart health.

In fact, it seems like the opposite would be true, that fats would clog your arteries and be harmful for your heart.

Here comes the interesting part.

The investigation of a possible link between fish oil and heart health began as a result of scientists taking note of Eskimo diets!?!

That’s right. Scientists observed that Eskimos who ate large amounts of fatty fish, as well as whale and seal meat, including blubber — in other words, a diet very high in fats and cholesterol — had almost no heart disease. This started them thinking . . . and researching.

What they learned is that not all fats are bad for your heart. In fact, some fats, Omega 3 fatty acids such as Eicosopentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) — which are found in fish oil — are quite good for your heart’s health.

By at least 2004, the positive relationship between fish oil with Omega 3s and heart health was acknowledged by virtually all experts. In that year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement acknowledging the role that Omega-3 fatty acids play in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

The heart health benefits of Omega 3s have been summarized this way by the prestigious American Heart Association: “Omega 3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of – or who have – cardiovascular disease.”

The Best Way To Get The Heart Health Benefits Of Fish Oil Is To Take A Molecularly Distilled Fish Oil Supplement

You can get the cardiac health benefits of fish oil by eating fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel at least twice a week.

Fish Oil And Heart HealthHowever, not everyone likes fish or has access to a safe and inexpensive supply of fish. Some people even have fish allergies.

Even if you enjoy eating fish and don’t have a fish allergy, there are several potential problems with getting the Omega 3s you need by eating fish. One concerns whether you will actually follow through consistently and the other concerns the safety of the fish you eat.

The maximum benefits are achieved by getting a proper level of the Omega 3s in your blood stream and maintaining that level. Therefore, if your fish eating is on again, off again, you don’t get the benefits.

In addition, you’ve probably heard about the contaminates such as mercury, PCBs and dioxins that have been found in some fish. These pollutants are potentially very dangerous, especially for pregnant and nursing women.

In view of this risk, and to insure that you get a regular and controlled dose on a daily basis, the best way to get the heart health benefits of fish oil is to take a molecularly distilled fish oil that is pure and completely free of all contaminates.

There are four international standards for fish oil purity, the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) standards, the European Pharmacopoeia standards and the Norwegian Medicinal Standard.

The company that I recommend, based on my research, as the best source for pure fish oil is Xtend-Life Natural Products which is located in New Zealand. Xtend-Life uses a purification process called molecular distillation and they follow even stricter purity standards than the four international standards.

For example, their standards for mercury are 10 times lower (better) than the standards set by international organizations, their PCB level is 18 times better than the CRN standards and their dioxin levels are four times better than the international standards require. They prove all of this through independent testing and they post the test results on their website for you to see.
